Lexical family Is the term that is used to denominate to those words that are derived from the same lexeme and because of this they share a similar meaning.
The lexical family is also known as the etymological family. In this way, a group of words that share the same etymological root but different derivative morphemes (suffixes, prefixes and interfixes), can be considered part of the same family (Gramáticas, 2013).
A lexical family can be created by adding a morpheme to a lexeme. In this sense, the lexeme will be the primitive word to which a prefix, suffix or interfix is added to create a new word with a meaning similar to that of the original word (Means, 2017).
Lexical families should not be confused with semantic families, since this second group is responsible for collecting words whose meaning is similar, so its structure and etymological root is completely different (ABC, 2017).
The main function of the lexical families is to satisfy the communication needs of the people. In this way, language is enriched through the creation of new words that share the same etymological root.
