What does Megadiverse mean?

The Megadiversity Or biological wealth refers to the amount of animal and plant species that a zone or nation counts.

This, as with economic wealth, is not equitably distributed.

An example of megadiverse is the amazon

In this sense, some countries have more varieties of animal and plant species than others.

In fact, there are 17 countries where more than 70% of the planet Earth's biodiversity is found.

These countries are called"megadiversos", a title coined by the Center for Global Conservation Monitoring of the United Nations Environment Program.

The terms"megadiverse"and"megadiversity"were first used in 1998 at a conference on biodiversity at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.

These terms were used to refer to the number of animal and plant species that were typical of a given area.

Currently, the terms are used to say"what has great diversity, especially if it is about biodiversity".

Megadiverse countries

The megadiverse countries are a group of nations that house more than 70% of the biodiversity of planet Earth. According to Conservation International, there are 17 megadiverse countries.

These countries have two or more of the following characteristics:

  • Geographical position: many of these countries are located in tropical regions.
  • Diversity of landscapes: the complexity of the landscapes makes possible that there is great diversity of animal species. Megadiverse countries have mountainous areas, plains, forests and jungles.
  • Isolation: the existence of islands has allowed the development of unique flora and fauna.
  • Size: The larger the area, the greater the number of species that the nation will harbor.
