The history of the Isla de las Muñecas is directly related to the story of Don Julián Santana Barrera, who was born in Xochimilco, a small town of Mexico City . Don Julian left his wife and family one day, in the middle of s. XX, to confine in an island of Teshuilo lake . The reasons that led to that decision are not entirely clear and are somewhat confusing, but as soon as they could be clarified, they showed that Don Julián did not have a completely healthy mind.
Soon after Don Julián arrived on the island, he made a chilling discovery on the shore of his island: he found the body of a dead girl, drowned in the lake . Shortly after, a doll also floated to the shore. That would change the life of Don Julián Santana Barrera and even change the shape and appearance of the island in the following years. Here would begin what would later be known as the history of Doll's island .
Alone on the whole island, Barrera took that doll that had brought the current and hung it in a tree with the firm idea of appeasing the spirit of the dead girl , that he thought was wrong on the island.
The story of the island of dolls tells that Barrera found that single doll insufficient, so he spent the next 50 years collecting dolls . Don Julián looked for dolls in the trash and canals and then hung them by the trees of the island. Depending on the state of the dolls, they were hung whole or in parts. Some were missing the head, or the body or some limbs.
Obviously these acts are not from a person in their right mind and with a healthy understanding of reality, and that makes many gaps and doubts exist around the history of the island of the dolls.
One of the biggest doubts is: Was there really that child who drowned in the lake? There are many people, including Santana's own family, who is certain that Don Julián never found that dead girl, but they are not sure if he invented it, imagined he had seen it or there was some kind of confusion in the story .
Whether the girl existed or not, what is clear is that Don Julián Santana Barrera dedicated everything he had left of his life.
How did the collector of old dolls die?
Of all the curious facts that this story of the island of the dolls has, the most spooky is perhaps the last, since the end of Santana's life had clear links with the story of the drowned girl. Julián Santana Barrera died in 2001. His body was found drowned in the lake, in the exact place where, according to him, he had found the drowned girl years before.
The result of all this spooky history of the island of the dolls was that tourists began to come to pay tribute. As history became so popular, these tourists appeared with dolls of their own to offer them. Today, these tributes are directed both to Don Julián and to the drowned girl of history, whether its existence is certain or not.
