Sinalefa: 45 Examples and Features

The Signal Is a literary resource that is used for the measurement of the syllables of a verse, being a figure of transformation. When we count the verses, if one syllable ends in vowel and the next one also begins by vowel or mute h, we counted it as a single syllable.

The metric of the verses consists of counting the poetic syllables contained in a verse. There are different literary resources that affect the computation of them.

Explained with a poem

Sinalefa

The signal is the metric resource by which if a word finished in vowel or"y", and its successor begins with vowel,"y"or h changes, computes as a single syllable, unlike the computation of grammatical syllables.

They form diphthongs of style, without taking into account the grammatical rules of the formation of diphthongs. It can happen that a signal arrives to form up with three syllables grammar, and only computes like a syllable in the metric of the verse.

If the vowel in which the word ends is tonic, that is to say, it is accentuated, the signal could not be produced, likewise, if the syllable by which the other word begins would also not give rise to a signal.

The signal is a metric resource, but is usually used in general speech. However, a poet has poetic license to include sinalefas or not, depending on how that benefits the metric of his poem.

The double or multiple signals, occur when in a poetic syllable we find three or more vowels. What is normal in this case is that the strong vowels (a, e, or) are in the middle of the signal surrounded by weak vowels (i, u)

The rule of the signal is not fixed and invariable. Some of the most outstanding examples of the sinalefa, are in the"Song of the Pirate"of Espronceda.

A-siaaun-la-do, al-o-troEu-ro-pa, where a 4-vowel signal is formed, and three distinct grammatical syllables.

Vol-vióaEu-ro-pa-des-de-a-mé-ri-ca, where a 5-vowel signal is formed.

The opposite effect to the signal is the hiatus. This consists of dividing grammatical diphthongs to count one more syllable in the verse metric.

Examples of Sinalefas

The cold weather

In this case, it is a 4-syllable verse

Su-frio-ho-r-riza.

In this case there is no signal, since the final letter of the word is accented, which gives it a different sound and both syllables are separated at the voice.

No-go-di-ne-ro ha-cetiem-po.

No-no-no-no-no-no-no, no-no-no-no-

In the first verse, we count 9 metric syllables, while in the second verse, having a comma, the signal does not occur, and the verse has 11 metric syllables.

Ma ri-po-sa

In this rhyme, the two verses have 4 syllables. However, if we accentuate it, it becomes a 5-syllable verse, undoing the signal.

Diéresis

The umlaut is used to undo a diphthong when we want one more syllable in the verse, for the poem to perform a harmonious metric. It is usually distinguished by a diaeresis in the corresponding vowel.

With inactive thirst

This way we get a 7-syllable verse.

Syneresis

It is the opposite effect to the umlaut, when two vowels that do not normally form a diphthong, are counted as a single syllable.

I see, feel, guide and poe - yes - a

We do a syleesis in poetry and in this way the verse has 12 syllables.
