Paraphrase: Types, Features and Examples

The paraphrase Is a reformulation of the meaning of a text or passage using other words. The word originated in ancient Greece, where it meant"additional way of expressing itself".

A paraphrase typically explains or clarifies the text being paraphrased. For example,"the signal was red"can be paraphrased in"the train was not allowed to pass because the signal was red".

Poetic recipient

A paraphrase does not necessarily accompany a direct quote. The paraphrase serves to place the source statement in perspective or to clarify the context in which it appeared.

A paraphrase is more detailed than a summary; A summary is shorter and contains only the main ideas of a text.

In paraphrases, you must always add the sources of the original text at the end of it.

Characteristics of the paraphrase

A good paraphrase must include all the main ideas of the original author. Also, it is important that the paraphrase contains only the ideas of the author, not the ideas of the one who does the enlargement.

This means that a good paraphrase must find a way to explicitly indicate the ideas implicit in the original text. This passage should add to the text through its explanation.

This text must be true, fair, balanced and objective. The author of the paraphrase should not invent or add things that are not true.

You should also write the paraphrase entirely in your own words and quote your sources correctly. The best paraphrases articulate comments that the author can have about the original text.

Elaboration of the paraphrase

In order to make a good paraphrase, you must read the original material very carefully so that you can understand what it is about. Then main ideas and general statements should be identified.

All this process must occur using the words of the author of the paraphrase, because if the same words are copied plagiarism can occur; You should always use a different vocabulary.

The information should be placed in order; Segment complex ideas into more blimber and small pieces.

Always keep true to the original ideas of the author, since the paraphrases must be truthful. You can not invent facts or personal opinions that are not found in the original text.

A good way to perform a paraphrase is to simply imagine that you are explaining the text read to a friend who does not quite understand what it is about. In this way the ideas presented will be clear and understandable.

Finally, you should always attribute the ideas to the author of the original material. A good way to do this is by citing appropriately.

Types of paraphrases

Mechanical Paraphrase

A mechanical paraphrase is one in which the original words of the text are replaced by synonyms, or in other cases by similar expressions.

Therefore, in the mechanical paraphrases the entire structure of the original writing is maintained; The syntax remains almost the same.

For example, it may be assumed that an original text reads as follows:"The house was already vacant. Two men were waiting for Pedro Páramo, who joined them to follow his path"

A mechanical paraphrase would be: The home was already empty. Several men waited for Pedro Páramo, who met next to them to continue the crossing .

Constructive Paraphrase

In these cases, the content of the text is completely changed keeping the same main ideas of the original text. The two texts have the same ideas but they are said in a completely different way.

For example, it can be assumed that an original text reads like this:" The house was already unoccupied. Two men were waiting for Pedro Páramo, who joined them to continue their journey."

A constructive paraphrase could be: The building was already empty. Pedro Páramo joined the men who were waiting for him to embark on the journey.

Translation Paraphrase

This paraphrase occurs when a text is translated in its original language into another language. Generally, most translations are paraphrases of translation since it is necessary to change certain idioms, words and syntax so that the text with its main ideas can be understood in the new language.

Comprehension Paraphrase

The paraphrases of understanding are used to explain some particular topic in the words of the person who performs the paraphrase.
