Tormund Matagigantes: Situation in Game of Thrones, Actor and Curiosities

Tormund Matagigantes , also known as Tormund or Tormund Giantsbane, is a character in the work of George R. R. Martin Song of ice and fire , as well as the adapted series of the HBO television network, game of Thrones . Tormund became one of the leaders of the Wild Men after the disappearance and death of Mance Ryder.

He is considered a fierce and lethal man during the battle. He demonstrates his skills during the Battle of Black Castle, where he murdered multiple members of the Night Watch in a strong and forceful way. In addition to this remarkable ability, he is known for having a jovial, cheerful and joking nature.

He often talks about his sexual encounters and his fierceness in battle. In books he does not have a point of view from the perspective of the character, so all that is known about this is through Jon Snow.

-It is said that he killed a giant and that he remained inside the belly of a giantess to protect himself from the cold during the winter.

-In the series, Tormund is rather thin and with a red beard.

-In both cases he maintains his kind, combative and loyal personality that is demonstrated when he becomes a friend of Jon Snow, even though at first he showed mistrust towards him.

Situation in Game of Thrones

Tormund first appeared in the third season, when Jon Snow mistook him for the King of the Wild Men. After being captured, Jon was sent along with Tormund and Ygritte south of the Wall to attack the Night's Watch.

At this point, Tormund showed some sympathy for Jon although he warns him that he would kill him if he even thinks to lie to him.

However, Jon continued to be questioned until he finally managed to escape. At that point, Tormund realized that Ygritte was unable to kill him because he is in love with him.

Shortly after the Battle of Black Castle was unleashed, where Tormund's skills are seen in battle by assassinating several members of the Night's Watch with great dexterity. After wounding Ser Alliser Thorne, he is shot down and taken prisoner.

After Maester Aemon healed the wounds, Tormund confessed to Jon that Ygritte was in love with him.

Other events

This character reappeared in the following seasons. Below are the most relevant facts during the plot:

-Presenced the execution of Mance Rayder by Stannis Baratheon. This was painful for him, since he saw how his friend had a humiliating death. Before Mance was burned, Jon Snow murdered him and Tormund considered it honorable. After the death of Mance, Tormund became leader of the Wild Men.

-Jon Snow is named as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch and suggests to Tormund form an alliance that allows peaceful coexistence between groups.

-The presence of the White Walkers helped to make this alliance narrow, in order to form an army that could combat this threat.

-In the process they make a trip to recruit more people to fight against the same enemy. Although the locals tried to hurt Jon, Tormund was responsible for defending him.

- After the murder of Jon in the hands of Alliser Thorne, Tormund and a group of Wild Men attack the Black Castle.

When he finished examining Jon's body, Tormund suggested that he be burned as soon as possible; however, he witnessed how the witch Melissandre revived him.

-Sansa Stark arrived at the Black Castle next to Brienne de Tarth and Podrick Payne. At that time Tormund is practically hypnotized by Brienne, which prevents him from not looking at her.

- During the time that remains in the castle planning the strategies military to fight Ramsey Bolton, Tormund continued with the insinuations towards Brienne.

-Jon and Tormund fight together again in the Battle of the Bastards, considered one of the most important in the plot.

-Also, the appointment of Jon as King of the North, after the victory over Ramsey Bolton, became a witness.

Seventh season

At this point the friendship and loyalty of Tormund towards Jon is a key piece; Tormund is a fundamental support to make known to the other kingdoms about the threat that the White Walkers represent. This threat was more evident in the seventh season.

Tormund joined Jon again on an expedition to Beyond the Wall, in order to capture a White Walker to take him to Westeros and ask for help for what would be the most important battle for survival.

Actor

The actor who plays Tormund Matagigantes is the Norwegian Kristofer Hivju, who has also worked as a screenwriter and television director.

He began his career when he debuted in 2001 in the television series Fox Groland. He has also participated in other productions on the small screen.

He has ventured into the world of theater and film in Norway, and in 2013 was part of the cast of the film M. Night Shyamalan, After Earth . In that same year he joined game of Thrones , where he participates to date.

Curiosities

- Physically, the character described in the book is plump, good-natured and white-bearded, while in the series, Tormund is thin and with a red beard.
