How to Stop Drinking Beer in 5 Steps (Quickly)

In this post I will give you remedies, methods and tips for Stop drinking beer .

I've never drank too much, although I had a university period in which I drank almost daily. At the end of the class I would go out with some classmates or others and we would go to bars that were crowded with students.

It is likely that you have experienced this yourself and want to stop drinking definitely. You may also have started drinking in social situations and that has also moved to the home; In meals or even when you are alone. That's the real problem.

However, before I will discuss the issue of whether beer makes us gain weight or not:

-In 2013 the Spanish Society for the Study of Obesity (SEEDO) and in 2014 the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Complutense University and the Preventive Medicine of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria indicated that beer does not gain weight.

-In 2013, Gary Taubes in his book How we get fat and what to do about it (RBA, 2013) states that beer is fattening. About a third of the calories of a normal beer come from malt, a refined carbohydrate that fattens by itself and, even more, when it acts next to alcohol, with which it goes hand in hand.

So what happens?

Some say that beer is not fattening, others are not.

In my opinion it is not fattening if at the same time you take a healthy diet and you exercise. And to get rid of doubts, eliminate alcohol and go to 0.0 (without alcohol).

Also, if you limit yourself to two glasses a day and if it is combined with a healthy diet and exercise, it may be good for reducing hypertension and cholesterol levels.

Therefore, I do not think that is the cause of the"beer belly." Rather, its cause is the result of spending so much time without exercise and an insane diet.

I also want to comment on some benefits of beer: it is diuretic, improves anemia, improves good cholesterol (HDL) and is very moisturizing.

And why do those who drink beer often have that belly?

Here there is a cognitive bias (an error of interpretation). We relate the belly directly to the beer and we believe that this is its only cause. We see the typical pot belly in a bar with a beer in hand or we have the typical friend that has that belly of Homer Simpson.

But like I said, there are doctors who recommend 2 beers a day.

The fact is that we do not see that people who have"belly beer"and who drink lots of beer also have poor eating habits and are sedentary.

I myself have friends who drink beer every day but they also feed very well, do not smoke and do sports. Result? They are healthy and thin.

Anyway, this is my opinion, that I have from what I have read and from my experience. Please leave comments on what you think.

So, remember Homer Simpson; He has that belly because he goes to Moe's bar every day, who knows if he drinks 5 beers or more, and then he's eating junk food all day, sitting on the couch and scratching his beer belly at work.

How to Stop Drinking and Remedies

1-Commitment and be aware of your goal

To start changing any habit you need to commit yourself and be aware of what it is that you want to change.

Do you want to leave the beer completely? Decrease up to a glass a day your consumption?

Clarify your goal and write it down. Literally; Write on a sheet what your goal is for beer and leave it in a visible place (with the fridge).

For example:

  • Do not drink more beer.
  • Decrease to a glass daily.

Once you have it clear, you must make a commitment to yourself. The power of this is incalculable.

It is actually very simple to compromise and then forget or break the engagement. I will not treat this issue here in detail although something that works for me very well is to make public commitments.

For example, whenever I have the opportunity, I speak of some goal I want to achieve, making it public.

2-Be aware of what is affecting you and how you will benefit

This can be called leverage.

It is about making yourself aware of the harmful effects that you may have on a beer addiction, including: deterioration of social and family relationships, hepatitis, cancer, brain damage, stroke, pregnancy damage...

Also of the benefits to leave it: to lose weight, to feel healthy, to improve the attention and concentration...

I advise you to directly write them on a sheet and put it next to the goal (you can use post-it). One column with benefits and others with detrimental effects.

3-Look for another habit

It's going to be much harder to stop drinking beer if you keep going to the same bar, hanging out with the same friends who drink beer or sitting in the living room watching TV (worse if you have beer in the fridge).

To quit, you better start acquiring another habit to replace drinking.

It can be: go to the gym, play tennis, dance, drink tea, drink juice, join a course / workshop, volunteer...

4-Reinforce the new habit

To consolidate the new habit, give yourself a prize every time you've done something right.

For example, if you've started jogging or gone to the gym, give yourself some prize money, such as watching a movie or eating your favorite food.

This will make it more likely that that behavior (jogging or gym) will be repeated again.

5-Other tips

-You can also target groups like Alcoholics Anonymous. This if you believe that your problem is serious or has begun to harm your health and personal well-being. Associations like this are guided by professionals with many years of experience and knowing people with your same problem will make you feel better and more motivated.

-If you tend to drink more when going out with your friends, you can consider changing places to which you go or at least discuss your problem with your friends. If your problem is serious, I would recommend that you limit 100% places like bars, pubs and never buy beer (even if you do not plan to go down the liquor hall or shop where you usually buy).

And have you managed to stop drinking beer? What has served you? I would also like to comment if you have been served these steps. Tell me your experience. I am interested!
