20 Examples of Heat Conduction

The driving Is one of three processes through which heat is transferred from a body with higher temperature to a body with a lower temperature.

This process refers to the transmission of caloric energy through the body molecules, which can be presented in solid, liquid or gaseous state.

In conduction there is no real displacement of the particles of caloric energy, but these are agitated and propagate through the body.

The transfer by conduction is invisible: a metal tool is heated when it comes into contact with the fire without any changes in it.

When the ice melts, it is about conduction. If we warm our hands by holding a cup of coffee, it is also driving.

When we iron clothes, the conduction of heat intervenes. Even when we burn with a flame, it happens due to heat transfer by conduction.

This shows that in our day to day, there are hundreds of examples of heat transfer through driving. More examples of this process are given below.

1- From a hot coffee to the cup containing it

Hot liquids transfer the heat to the container containing them, causing the latter to warm up a bit.

For example, if you pour hot coffee into a cup, it will get hot.

2- From a hot cup to our hands

When it is cold, people drink hot drinks to warm up. If the beverage container is held for long enough, the hands of the person holding it will get a little warmer.

3- From the beach to our feet

The sediments on the beach absorb the heat from the sun and this heat is transferred to our feet if we walk barefoot on the sand.

4- Hot compresses to muscles

Compresses (hot water bags) are used to relax muscles. The heat is transferred from the compress to the skin and from there to the muscles.

5- From the fire to the metal tongs

When making a barbecue, the instruments used to turn the meat are made of metal. When these pliers come in contact with the rotisseries, heat transfer is initiated.

If the tongs remain in contact with the heat source for a long time, the skin of the person holding it could be injured.

6- From the radiator to the hand

The radiators are responsible for producing heat to heat the houses. For this reason, the surface of these devices is usually hot. If you place your hand on the radiator, it will transfer the heat and it is even possible that we feel pain if the heat is excessive.

7- From the hand to an ice cube

If an ice cube is placed on a person's hand, the heat will transfer from the skin to the cube, causing it to melt.

8- From the engine of a car to the hood

When the engine of an automobile is turned on, the bonnet is heated due to the transfer of the heat generated by the engine's operation.

9- From an iron to a shirt

The irons are heated to eliminate wrinkles in the clothing. When the iron comes into contact with the fabric, it begins to transfer the heat.

10- From the fire of the chimney to a poker

The pokers that are used to move the pieces of wood in the chimney are made of metal, which are good conductors of the heat. If a poker is left in contact with the source of heat in the fireplace, heat will be transferred from it to the poker.

If the poker stays in contact with the fire long enough, the heat will be conducted throughout the length of the metal tool.

11- From one hand to one coin

Coins have a tendency to be cold, or at least colder than the skin of the human being. If a coin is held in the hand, the heat will transfer from the skin to the coin, causing it to become hot.

12- From one person to another

On a cold day, people can hug each other to keep the heat between them. Heat is transferred from the individual with higher temperature to the individual with lower temperature.

13- From the hot food to the dish that contains it

The hot food drives the heat towards the dish it is on (if it is a conductive material such as ceramic).

14- From the hand to a piece of chocolate

If we hold for a long time a piece of chocolate, it will melt from the heat being transferred from the hand to it.

15- From a flame to our skin

If we have a naked skin touch a flame (a candle, the kitchen, among others), the heat will transfer from the fire to our skin, causing us to burn.

16- From the stones to our skin

Stones absorb heat from the sun. If we touch one that has been exposed to the sun for a long time, the heat will transfer from it to our skin.

17- From the light bulbs to our skin

Traditional bulbs heat up when turned on. If we touch one on, the heat will transfer from the bulb to our skin, causing burning.

18- From drinks to ice

When ice is added to a beverage, the heat is transferred by conduction of the beverage to the ice causing the ice to thaw.

19- From a soup to a teaspoon

If a teaspoon is left inside a dish with hot soup, heat is transferred from the liquid to the metal.

20- From the flame to the pot and the pot to the water

When we boil water, the heat is drawn from the flame to the pot containing the water. From there, the heat is transferred to the water causing it to reach its boiling point.
