Personal Problems: Prison and Drugs

Cameron's acting career was truncated by a drug-related problem and for this reason he was deprived of his freedom on several occasions. He had his first encounter with the law when in 1999 he was arrested at the Gansevoort Hotel in Manhattan, New York for purchase and possession of controlled substances (in this case: methamphetamine).

After Douglas's first arrest, his parents issued a statement detailing the difficult time the family was going through with recent events linked to their child and drug use. They said they were devastated and disappointed by that situation.

He was later arrested in 2007 in California after a police officer found a syringe with liquid cocaine in his car.

Finally, on July 28, 2009 Cameron Douglas was again arrested in Manhattan for possession of 0.5 pounds (230 grams) of methamphetamine and because he held a large amount of this banned substance, it was concluded that this seized drug was Intended for sale and marketing, which is why an investigation was opened for possession and distribution attempt. According to the authorities, just prior to the arrest, Douglas had agreed to receive $ 15,000 in cash as a half-pound payment for methamphetamine ("crystal").

Given the facts, he admitted to the authorities that he had drugged while he was staying in the room of the well known Manhattan Hotel and informed the Judge that he was aware of the seriousness of the event and that he knew that it was wrong.

All his influential family interceded and sent communiqués so that justice would take pity on him and take into account that despite his mistakes was a good person. His father suggested that he be granted the possibility of serving his sentence through a detoxification in a care center, but the Judge did not accept such a suggestion and was stern with Cameron on the ground that he was a repeat offender and should be convicted of having acted deliberately , Reckless and blatant.

Shortly afterwards, on January 27, 2010, after finishing the preliminary hearing of the trial, was involved in a controversy again, the authorities discovered his then girlfriend Kelly Scott trying to take heroin to the detention center (while he was under arrest domiciliary). It was hidden in an electric toothbrush.

As he was facing charges of trafficking in large quantities of methamphetamine (in New York) and recent possession of heroin, he was sentenced to five (5) years in prison on 20 April 2010. At first it had been a sentence of ten (10) years but this one was reduced because Douglas collaborated with the justice admitting the facts. He was transferred to a minimum security prison located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

His father, Michael Douglas, after all these events decided to speak publicly once again and called himself"bad father"assuming much of the blame.

In October 2011, they discovered that he possessed drugs in prison, in this case, he received them with the help of his former lawyer Jennifer Rhida (with whom he had an affair). Consequently, in December of the same year, he was sentenced to an additional four and a half years in prison for this event. They tried to appeal this decision but it was unfounded.

Rhida, later wrote a book where in his autobiography also tells his story with Douglas, the book is called"Criminal that I am"and there tells that the young man suffered anxiety and depression.

In January of 2013, they found drugs again, for which he spent a good part of his solitary confinement, until March 2014, where he returned to a normal cell and was able to receive visits from his father again.
