8 Advantages and Disadvantages of the Media

The media have both advantage as disadvantages . One of the main advantages is that they allow you to communicate despite the distance.

On the other hand, one of the disadvantages is that these depend to a great extent on the technology: if this fails, the media will collapse.

8 Advantages and Disadvantages of the Media

You can distinguish two media: mass and personal. The mass media are those that are responsible for transmitting information to a large part of the population.

They are useful because they keep people abreast of current events. These are the newspaper, the radio, the television, the social networks and other internet-based platforms.

On the other hand, the personal media are those that allow to establish relations between smaller groups of individuals: family, friends, colleagues, companions, among others.

Some examples of these media are telephones, smartphones / cell phones and instant messaging applications.

Advantages of the media

Technology has revolutionized the way the media work. In fact, a branch of technology is in charge of the development of devices and programming oriented to the improvements of the communication and information systems.

This translates into a number of advantages that will be presented below.

1- Remote communication

The most obvious advantage of the media is that it facilitates remote communication.

Thanks to the electronic devices (telephones, computers, tablets, among others) it is possible to speak in real time with people who are not in the same country.

2- They are immediate

Before electronic devices existed the remote communication was done through the postal mail.

Between the issuance of the letter and the receipt of an answer could be a long time, which made communication not particularly effective.

However, thanks to the advances in communication today, the distance interaction can be immediate.

There are different types of platforms that make this kind of communication possible. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter and applications like WhatsApp are some examples of these.

3- Remote study

Previously, distance courses could be taken by correspondence. However, the process could be tedious because of postal delays.

At present, information and communication technologies have favored distance learning. In this way, students can stay at home while learning through various platforms, such as social networks.

4- Globalization

The media has increased the process of globalization . Not only has distance communication made countries closer to each other culturally, it has also made it possible to unify the world economy in a way.

5- Are economic

Once they have been developed, the media are economical for their users.

For example, email and social networks do not have additional costs in addition to the payment of internet service. In any case, sending a mail from Mexico to China is much cheaper than making a phone call.

6- Reduce the cultural gap

In addition to enabling rapid and efficient exchange of information, the media have helped to remove language, cultural and geographical barriers between nations.

For example, these means allow people from different countries and cultures to come together to exchange ideas and get to know each other's culture better. By doing so, you reduce the prejudices you might have about a society.

7- Advertising

The media is a way to promote services and products. In this sense, they constitute an advantage in the area of advertising and marketing.

8- Mass dissemination of information

Many media are massive, such as radio, television and newspaper. In this sense, they allow to disseminate information quickly and effectively, reaching a large part of the population.

Disadvantages of the media

Although they offer multiple benefits, the media have a number of disadvantages. Here are some of these.

1- Depend on the technology

The media depend directly on technology. This means that if the technology collapses the media will do the same.

Because the technology is not perfect, it often has flaws. For example, social media platforms may fail when data transfer is excessive.

2- Create dependency

Humans can develop dependence on the media. The cell phone is one of the technological gadgets in the field of communication that is more addictive.

3- They are not always reliable

Among the advantages of the mass media was the importance of their massive nature. This feature may be negative if the information that is transmitted is not true.

In social networks, often unverifiable information or unreliable sources, which can lead to problems.

4- Cost of development

The use of the media is relatively inexpensive. However, its development is not. In fact, the cost of projects around information and communication technologies tends to be very high.

5- Problems of authorship

The media can bring legal problems, especially with regard to copyright. Once an author has uploaded original information to the internet, this information is likely to be plagiarized by other users.

6- Data not sent

If there are errors in the media system, it may be that the information is not sent from one user to another, interrupting the interaction between the partners.

7- Mass manipulation

The media can be used to manipulate the masses. Those responsible for transmitting information through the mass media can distort the facts to make the people support or reject a certain idea.

8- Less face-to-face interaction

The existence of telephones, social networks, among others, makes people have less and less social interaction with people in their environment. This is mainly observed in the younger members of society.
