60 Examples of Emphatic Accent

The term accent emphatic Is used to refer to the graphic symbols and pronunciation used in the words"what","who","when","where","how"and"how much"when they have interrogative or exclamative value. For example: What a joy! What do you want to drink?

Graphically, the emphatic accent is represented by the tildes that are placed in these words. For its part, phonetically, the emphatic accent is represented by pronunciation: if it is an exclamatory sentence, the intonation ascends at the beginning and descends abruptly at the end. If it is an interrogative sentence, the intonation rises towards the end of the question.

Emphatic accent

The emphatic tildes are part of the diacritic markings (those that are placed to differentiate two words that are written alike but have different functions). In this sense, emphatic tildes do not establish a difference of meaning but are used to differentiate the various functions that a single word can have.

For example:"when"(without tilde) is a temporary adverb while"when"(with tilde) is an interrogative pronoun or adjective.
